Kintamani and Mount Batur Sunrise Tour – October 11th, 2016
We felt so impressed when we visited Lake Batur with its active volcano. Kintamani area where Lake Batur is located, also owns beautiful scenery. Kintamani is undoubtly one of the most favorite tourist destinations in Bali. Mount Batur has erupted about 24 times since 1800 and is still active until now. Lake Batur is the biggest caldera lake in Bali Island. Surely you can climb to the summit of Mount Batur which is about 1,700 meters high and takes about 2 hours, although we only enjoyed seeing the volcano from the road.
The mountainous region around Kintamani which centers on the spectacular volcanic caldera of Mount Batur with its deep Crater Lake and bubbling hot springs is rugged with a high and wild splendor. Amazing mountain air and dizzying views in all directions, as well as several important temples, are what makes Kintamani one of the most memorable tourist destinations in Bali. In fact, Mount Batur is actually just a small volcano, but its location is in the heart of a huge crater 14 kilo meters in diameter. Another magnificent beauty in Kintamani is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake which the adjacent to the volcano and is all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. The volcano itself is still active until now. It is recorded that in 1917 it claimed thousands of lives and destroyed hundreds of temples. Other eruptions have occurred since which forced the local population to be relocated, along with several of their temples including one of the main Bali temples which is called “Pura Ulun Danu Batur”. Initially inside the huge crater, this temple has already been relocated to the top of the ridge overlooking it. The present location of the temple is very easy to access as it is beside the main road in Kintamani.
There are a number of alternatives to get to Mount Batur in Kintamani which include tour busses and taxis. We rented a car and driver for the entire day from Bali Jungle Trekking community. The drive from the southern areas of Bali island takes about an hour or so depending on the traffic. Each of us had taken a lot of pictures taken here with the volcano behind us as the backdrop. Overall, we enjoyed our trip to Batur so much. In the future we will surely do more challenging activities there such trekking and hiking up the volcano to witness the beautiful sunrise. If you are in Bali this is well worth the drive to see an active volcano, and also to see some of the countryside along the way with Bali Jungle Trekking community. By Parry Aliferis – Aus
