A small island well-known for its fascinating diving sites and marine life.
Menjangan Island is a small island, located 5 miles to the north-western part of Bali island and is part of the Indonesian archipelago. “Menjangan” in Indonesian means “Deer“. The name was given by the local people that observe wild deer flocks swimming to the island every spring and covering a distance of about 1.2 miles.
The island is a significant part of West Bali National Park. The closest big towns are Singaraja, located in the northern part of Bali and Banyuwangi, located on the eastern coastal area of Java. The closest settlement is Sumberkima village. The closest airport is Letkol Wisnu (about 8 miles from the island).
The island is approximately 15 sq miles in size. The surface of the island is basically sandy and dry peat mossy. Not many people live in this island except some Hindu monks not more than 20. There are 3 fascinating Hindu temples and a mooring harbor in the island. The fauna that can be found here are wild deer, wild rabbits, iguanas, and wild chickens.
The island is considered to be a significant part of the local tourism industry, because its marine fauna includes one of the best-preserved coral reefs in the area. All scuba-diving shops arrange daily trips to the island. Menjangan island is also well-known for wall diving. As part of West Bali National Park, it was the first internationally-known diving location in Bali.
